ABOUT THE GOLDSMITH FAMILY

RESEARCH
Our company motto is "Quality Products through Creative Research." From the very beginning our research programs have had solid breeding goals and objectives, which are guidelines to future introductions. Goldsmith's breeding projects are a unique blend of research work and plant selection at both our Gilroy research station and Goldsmith Seeds Europe B.V., our station in The Netherlands.

PRODUCTION
Our breeding goals are determined by our customers. We listen to what the market demands and tailor our breeding programs accordingly. The most important overall goal we have set for our bedding plant breeding programs is that our new introductions must have outstanding garden performance in addition to excellent greenhouse performance. Using the latest techniques and facilities, we have intensified our research so that we can more rapidly introduce varieties that are adaptable worldwide.

The production of high quality seed is of equal importance to the development of new and improved varieties. Almost all the seeds of Goldsmith varieties are produced in greenhouses located in special climactic zones. Goldsmith's excellent reputation for dependable delivery is the result of the efficiency and reliability of our seed production operations. There are production sites located in Guatemala, Central America, and Kenya, East Africa. By taking advantage of the optimum climates for the production of high quality seed, our production companies have proven successful year after year.

SEED TECHNOLOGY
We are proud to be in the forefront of seed technology research. All of our work in this field is directed toward bringing high quality seed to our customers. Our Seed Technology Department is making innovative strides to improve methods to clean, separate and store seeds. All seed lots are tested for germination, purity and vigor to ensure that our seed is always of top caliber. This is an area of increasing importance to bedding plant growers and, also, to the seed industry. Goldsmith's Seed Technology Department will continue making advances in this field.

ABOUT THE GOLDSMITH FAMILY

Glenn and Jane Goldsmith - founders of Goldsmith Seeds, Inc.

Born into a horticultural family, Glenn was destined to work with flowers. Glenn A. Goldsmith was born in Ontario, California. He attended U.C. Davis and received his B.S. in Genetics in 1950. Glenn married Jane Evans in 1951 and they had four sons during the next six years. During that time, his studies continued at U.C.L.A. with four years of graduate work in Ornamental Horticulture and Plant Breeding. In 1954, Glenn went to work for Denholm Seed Company in Lompoc, California, perfecting his work as a plant breeder -- working on such crops as marigold, verbena and aster. After eight years, Glenn went on to Pan-American Seed Co., as Director of Research and relocating the whole family to Colorado.
Glenn and Jane started Goldsmith Seeds in 1962 in Gilroy, California. Today, Goldsmith Seeds has grown into a multi-national company with more than 4,000 employees on three continents. Glenn is proud of the fact that his company remains family owned and operated. Goldsmith Seeds has been a leader throughout the world in developing and producing new hybrid flowers. Goldsmith has won more than 30 international awards for introducing innovative bedding plants to the world.

But Glenn's innovations aren't limited to flowers. He has established innovative employee programs, including child care facilities in Gilroy, Guatemala and Kenya. Guatemala and Kenya, which are the major seed-production sites for the company, also maintain health care clinics for employees and their families. The Guatemalan government presented Glenn the Guatemalan Peace Medallion in 1997 for retaining seed-production farms in that country despite the longest civil war in Central America's history. Glenn has also garnered numerous awards from All America Selections, the American Society of Horticulture Science and the American Horticultural Society.

Joel Goldsmith - President and CEO of Goldsmith Seeds Inc.
Joel has been with the company that his parents founded for more than 29 years. He has worked at a number of positions until becoming president in 1989. Joel attended the University of California at Davis. He has held director positions in a number of industry, trade and service organizations. Joel served on the boards of All America Selections, the National Garden Bureau, Fleuroselect, Bedding Plants Foundation, Professional Plant Growers Association, the American Horticultural Society and the Gilroy Rotary Club.

Under Joel's guidance, Goldsmith Seeds has expanded and flourished in the horticulture industry with 4,000 employees on three continents. Goldsmith Seeds also operates employee child-care centers at operations in the United States, Guatemala and Kenya, East Africa. In the recent past, Goldsmith Seeds was involved in Plant for the Cure -- a program to benefit breast cancer research. Under Joel’s direction the program raised more than $400,000 for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

"The best partnerships are those that help both parties," Joel says. "This belief has served us very well and has become the backbone of our company."

Richard Goldsmith - Vice President of Goldsmith Seeds, Inc.
Richard has been with the company that his parents founded for more than 29 years. He attended Du Page Horticultural School in West Chicago. He helped establish production facilities in Kenya, East Africa. In fact, both of Richard's sons were born in Kenya during the time he and his wife were establishing the production facilities.

Jim Goldsmith - Director of Operations of Goldsmith Seeds, Inc.
Jim grew up doing all aspects of the business his father started in 1962. This included hoeing weeds in the fields, working in the maintenance shop and watering in the greenhouse.

Jim has worked full-time at Goldsmith Seeds since 1976. He became Operations Manager of the Gilroy research and development site in 1988, and was named vice president in 1999. Now, as Operations Director at company headquarters, Jim is in charge of maintaining and expanding facilities at the 60-acre site.
